Life can get complicated, right? Especially when there’s all this talk about joy, togetherness, and making happy memories—but that’s not reflective of everyone’s reality. This year might feel different because your loved one isn’t here, and you’re spending it alone for the first time. Or maybe family gatherings bring about more stress than they do comfort. Whatever your situation looks like, it’s okay if getting through this time feels hard. You’re not the only one who feels like this, and it doesn’t mean you can’t still find small moments of happiness and warmth along the way. Here are a few ways you can make it through the season and care for yourself.

Focus on the Meaningful Things

If you’re missing someone special, it can help to bring a little piece of them into your celebrations. Many people find peace in lighting a candle and dedicating a moment of silence for those that passed. Some also share unique or funny stories that can bring a moment of happiness. Whatever you choose to do, it doesn’t have to be big—just something that honors their memory and feels comforting.

And if certain family situations feel stressful or draining, remember you can show up in ways that protect your peace. You can appreciate the good in people without forcing yourself into uncomfortable spaces. It’s okay to set healthy boundaries, step out a little early, or take a breather when you need to.

Connect With People Around You

If you’re spending some time alone, it doesn’t have to mean you have to isolate yourself entirely. This is the year you could do something different that’s just for you. Take that trip you’ve been putting off, step out of your comfort zone and try a new cuisine, or volunteer somewhere that makes you feel connected while giving back. Simply being around people can remind you that you’re not alone and even that you’re part of something bigger. And if you have friends you can reach out to—do it! Plan something small, like a dinner or an afternoon coffee, and enjoy a few hours of engaging conversation while building a deeper connection.

Show Yourself Kindness

It’s easy to forget about self-care, especially when life feels busy or heavy. But small acts of kindness toward yourself can make a big difference. Think about the little things that bring you comfort. This could be things like taking a long bath, binge-watching your favorite show, or rereading a book that lets your imagination run wild. These simple moments can lift your mood and remind you that you can show yourself kindness in small, simple ways.

Create Your Own Seasonal Traditions

Seasonal events don’t look the same for everyone. You don’t need to have a big family gathering or do all the things that you might have seen on TikTok. Create your own traditions that come from the things that bring you joy, like checking out something new in the city, making your favorite dish, or spending all day in a set of cozy pajamas with a book. Whatever feels right for you is enough.
