Let’s Talk About Summertime Sadness

Summertime Sadness isn’t just a Lana Del Rey song.

Certainly sadness can strike during any season but there is a particular disappointment when it captures you in the summertime. Sometimes it seems as though there is a lot of pressure put on the summer months. As children, in the summer, we are given respite from school and instead opt for play and leisure. For many adults, the summer season may or may not bring a change in schedule. Perhaps you still walk your usual route to the office, or maintain the same work routine. Whether your summer schedule looks different or not, the human psyche is always vulnerable to changes in mood. So, we are here with some tips to help you shake off the sadness.

  1. Get back to the basics

When we aren’t feeling like ourselves, the little things can feel really hard. Activities like brushing your teeth, getting dressed, or even showering can feel overwhelming. If you are able to go through the motions of these basic hygiene and lifestyle tasks you are somewhat tricking your brain into its usual routine. On the harder days it’s important to not try and do too much. Plan ahead by laying out your clothing for the next day so that when you wake up, the effort is removed from the picture. Little tricks like this help make your daily routine all the more easier.

  2. Declutter your space

Deep cleaning isn’t just for Spring time! Cleaning, organizing, and decluttering can be so grounding for the mind, body and soul. Anytime you find yourself in a funk, a deep clean is a great thing to add to the schedule. Schedule it in on a Sunday afternoon, and watch yourself become lighter as you get rid of excess and take control of your physical space. To motivate yourself to do this, throw on some music (find our Spotify playlists here) and plan a treat or reward for yourself following your cleaning session.

  3. Visualize (and seek out) joy

When the days feel like they are dragging on and you are simply not feeling any better, take a moment and close your eyes and think about small ways to bring joy into your day. It may look like stopping at your favorite coffee shop, or planning a fun day trip. Think about the small and seemingly insignificant ways you can bring a smile to your face, and start to work those into your routine.

  4. See a mental health professional
